Kilmarnock 0 - 5 Celtic: Celtic Clinch the League in Style

Published on 15th May, 2024

In a fitting tribute to Tommy Burns on the 16th anniversary of his passing, Celtic demonstrated their championship quality with a sublime performance against Kilmarnock. Just needing one point to secure their third Scottish Premiership title in row, they went all-in and came away with a resounding 5-0 victory at Rugby Park.

The opener hastily arrived in the 5th minute with Adam Idah cashing in the early opportunity, setting the pace for a game that would see Celtic dominate. His strike, despite carrying a hint of controversy involving Killie player Robbie Deas, was swiftly followed by Daizen Maeda's clinical finish in the 12th minute.

By the time James Forrest made it three before half time, adding to his laudable season, the game was already firmly in Celtic's grip. Matt O’Riley further drove home the dominance with a second-half brace in the 51st and 71st minutes, marking his significant contribution this season with a total league goal tally of 17.

The game wasn't without its drama; Danny Armstrong's brilliant strike for Killie was ruled offside, much to the relief of the Celtic defence. Despite the hosts' spirited attempts to console their home supporters with some glimmer of hope, it was clear that Brendan Rodgers' side was on another level.

Throughout the season, Brendan Rodgers' homecoming had been met with varied responses, but this commanding performance to clinch the title will certainly quell some doubters. The Irishman's return paid dividends, as Celtic’s title win highlights a season finishing strongly under his leadership..

Speaking after the historic win, Celtic captain Callum McGregor could hardly contain his delight, reflecting on the team's resilience and hard work throughout the season. The triumphant Celtic supporters were jubilant, echoing their manager's praises in a song rarely heard since Rodgers left for Leicester several years ago. Hearty celebrations and a sense of solid unity between players, fans, and manager could be distinctly felt at Rugby Park. Neil Lennon was even warmly cheered by the celebrating crowd.

As the celebrations continue, the team will quickly have to set their sights on the upcoming Scottish Cup final against Rangers to make it a league and cup double.
