Celtic have officially announced the signing of veteran goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel on a one-year contract. The 37-year-old Dane, who boasts 105 caps for his country, is set to reunite with manager Brendan Rodgers, with whom he previously worked at Leicester City.
Schmeichel, known for his tenure at Leicester where he won the Premier League in 2016 and the FA Cup in 2021, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Scottish champions. He joins the squad in the United States, where they are currently on a pre-season tour, and aims to fill the void left by the now-retired Joe Hart.
Speaking on his exciting move, Schmeichel said, "I am absolutely delighted to join Celtic and can’t wait to get started. Celtic is one of the world’s proper football clubs, a massive name and a place of real passion and success. Celtic is what football is all about."
He expressed his enthusiasm about reuniting with Brendan Rodgers, stating, "I know Brendan very well. He is a top manager and someone I can’t wait to work with again. I’m really looking forward to meeting up with the boys in America, starting our work, and of course, meeting our fans who bring so much to Celtic."
Rodgers shared his confidence in the new signing, commenting, "I am really pleased to bring Kasper to Celtic. He is a real quality keeper and someone with the ability and personality to be great for us. He is a guy I trust and someone who knows how to win. He lives for football and is coming to a club where he will feel the same passion that he has for the game."
Schmeichel's extensive career spans over three decades, beginning at Manchester City and including notable stints at Notts County, Leeds United, and most prominently Leicester City, where he played over 400 games. Recently, he had spells at Nice and Anderlecht before becoming a free agent.
As Schmeichel integrates into the team, expectations are high for him to contribute to more silverware and help keep Celtic's momentum going strong into the new season.
