Champions League MD1: The Stats That Stand Out

Published on 20th September, 2024

Match Day One in the new-look Champions League has come to a close, and Celtic are sitting pretty, 2nd out of 36 teams after their 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava.

And with that, it means we now have a whole batch of stats courtesy of UEFA. Now while it's likely too early to be looking into team metrics, the individual player stats are worthy of note.

Celtic players appear to be among the hardest working, with McGregor and Engels coming joint 4th in the distance covered metric, out of the 568 players who appears in Europe's elite competition this week. Both were recorded as having covered 12.6km. In first place was Bayern Munich's Pavlovic with 13.5km, in second place was Koke of Atletico Madrid with 13.4km, and in third was Preuler of Bologna with 12.9km. Kimmich of Bayern is also joint-4th with McGregor and Engels on 12.6km. The rest of the team were also well-represented: Taylor ranks 17th at 12km, Maeda ranks 54th on 11.1km and even central defender Scales ranks 103rd with 10.6km

UEFA also provide a top-speed, and, unsurprisingly, Maeda appears in the top 10. He was clocked at 34.2km/h (21.25mph) making him 6th fastest out of the 568 players who appeared. But he can go even faster: last season he was ranked 4th in the entire competition, at 35.6 km/h (22.1mph). Dortmund winer Karim Adeyemi was the fastest in the competition at 36.3km/h (22.6 mph). And while Maeda might not be outright the fastest, he runs like that all night!
