Celtic Set to Offer Alistair Johnston an Improved Contract

Published on 12th September, 2024

Celtic are preparing to open negotiations with Canadian right-back Alistair Johnston over a new contract, potentially making him one of the club's top earners. The move comes as the Scottish champions look to secure the long-term services of key players following the conclusion of the transfer window.

Johnston, 25, joined Celtic two years ago from CF Montreal and quickly established himself as a regular starter under Ange Postecoglou, impressing with consistent performances in defence. Despite having three years remaining on his current deal, the club aims to extend his contract and bring his salary in line with the team’s highest earners.

Brendan Rodgers has expressed his desire to reward Johnston for his contributions, with initial discussions already underway between the club and the player’s representatives. Johnston has become a crucial part of Celtic's line-up, especially with their perfect start to the 2024/25 domestic campaign.

However, Johnston’s immediate future is clouded by injury concerns. The defender limped off during Canada's 2-1 victory over the United States due to a hamstring issue. Although early reports suggested a potential lengthy absence, Canada's head coach, Jesse Marsch, downplayed the severity of the injury. According to Marsch, the decision to substitute Johnston was precautionary, and the player is expected to undergo further assessment by Celtic’s medical staff before their upcoming match against Hearts.

Johnston’s importance to the team extends beyond domestic competitions. With Celtic set to begin their Champions League campaign next week, the Canadian international’s fitness will be closely monitored. Should his injury prove to be minor, Johnston will have the opportunity to showcase his abilities on the European stage, starting with the club’s opening fixture against Slovan Bratislava. If not, backup right-back Anthony Ralston will step in.

As Johnston nears his 26th birthday, his long-term future at Celtic appears to be a top priority for the club. With his current contract expiring when he turns 28, the Hoops are keen to avoid any potential risks associated with the Bosman ruling down the line, which could allow him to leave on a free transfer. By securing Johnston’s services now, Celtic should be better placed to fend off interest from clubs in richer leagues, ensuring the defender continues to be a key player both domestically and in Europe.

The club’s desire to retain its top talent is a testament to Johnston’s impact since joining from MLS, and a new deal would not only reward his contributions but also signal Celtic’s intent to build a squad capable of sustained success under Rodgers.
