Brendan Rodgers' first summer signing brings depth and future potential to the Hoops' goalkeeping lineup.
Celtic have made their first move of the summer transfer window by signing Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo from Aston Villa. The 22-year-old joins the club on a five-year deal, with the transfer fee reported to be around £1m.
Sinisalo, who spent last season on loan at Exeter City, made a significant impact at the League One side, earning Player of the Year honors after 50 impressive appearances. His previous stints include a loan period at Ayr United, giving him valuable experience in the Scottish football landscape.
Speaking to Celtic TV, Sinisalo expressed his enthusiasm for joining a club of Celtic's stature. "I know Celtic is a huge football club and it's really exciting to be part of something so big. It feels amazing," the young goalkeeper said.
Brendan Rodgers, in welcoming Sinisalo, highlighted the club's long-term vision. "I am delighted to welcome Vil to Celtic. He is a keeper with real qualities and someone we have been aware of and monitored for some time. Clearly, we have been looking to develop our goalkeeping team, and we are really pleased to have secured one of the talented keepers we really wanted," Rodgers remarked.
Sinisalo is expected to act as cover and competition for the experienced Kasper Schmeichel, who is set to join the squad soon following Joe Hart's retirement. His role will be pivotal as he learns from Schmeichel and integrates into the team during their pre-season tour in America.
The new recruit's journey to Celtic was influenced by former Celtic player and Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell, who had encouraging words about the move. "Without Gary Caldwell, I wouldn’t be sitting here now. He’s only had good things to say about Celtic," Sinisalo added.
