Alistair Johnston Suffers Hamstring Injury on International Duty

Published on 8th September, 2024

Alaistair Johnston was substituted after 25 minutes during an international friendly between Canada and the USA.

The right-back initially held his left leg and seemed as though he might continue, but he was substitued soon after. More promisingly, he didn't seem to be in too much pain, and was able to walk off the pitch unassisted.

At half time, it was reported to be an apparent hamstring injury.

Hopefully the substitution was more of a precaution than a necessity, and that seems plausible given the relative unimportance of the game.

Johnston has been a fairly resilient player for Celtic, with only one injury since joining, though it did keep him out for a while.

At the end of April, during Ange’s second season, he suffered an ankle injury in a Scottish Cup semi-final win over Rangers, which ruled him out for the rest of the season. Celtic were cruising in the league at that point, and Ralston proved to be adequate cover, so his absence wasn’t too painful. He underwent surgery on the ankle, which caused him to miss a handful of games at the start of the following season. Since then, however, he’s been ever-present.
